School History
Junyuan Primary School (JYPS) adopted her name from the former Choon Guan Primary School. Choon Guan School, a Christian mission co-educational school, was formerly known as Katong Girls’ School. The school was renamed Choon Guan School when it moved to Koon Seng Road in 1925. Choon Guan School was separated into English and Chinese schools in 1936. The English school was named Choon Guan English School. It was later renamed Presbyterian Boys’ School in 1950 whereas the Chinese school remained as Choon Guan Chinese School. The schools, located in close proximity to each other, operated along Koon Seng Road from the pre-war period till the 1980s.
Located at Tampines Street 91, Junyuan Primary School was established in 1988 as a single-session school. ‘Junyuan’ means ‘source of talents’ in Mandarin. It was officially opened on 2 September 1989 with 20 classes, an enrolment of 670 students and a teaching staff of 29. With good academic and non-academic track records, the school has since grown in student enrolment and teaching strength, establishing herself as one of the choice schools in Tampines.
With the completion of PRIME (2008-2009), improved facilities have also allowed the school to embark on customised programmes to meet students’ learning needs. The 'white spaces' around the school are carved out as learning stations with murals, displays and manipulative objects for student participation in experiential learning. With the enlarged classroom spaces, teachers can now use a wider range of creative pedagogies to engage the students. In 2011, the new campus was officially opened.
In 2019, the school merged with East View Primary School. The merged school retains the name ‘Junyuan Primary School’ and is located at the JYPS site.

Key Milestones

1988-1989 | Formerly known as Choon Guan Primary School, Junyuan Primary School (JYPS) opened on 4th January at 2 Tampines Street 91. On 2nd September, Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC Mr Yatiman Yusof officially opened JYPS. |
1992 | The first athletic meet was held on 14 April 1992. That year, 800 students from Primary 4 to 6 participated in the event that was held at the Tampines Stadium. |
1998 | JYPS celebrated her 10th anniversary on 21 November 1998. The Malay Dance Club members performed ‘Sarong Dance’ and the Chinese Dance Club performed an aboriginal village dance. |
2003 | A “Food-and-Fun” fair was held to celebrate the school’s 15th Anniversary as a significant milestone in the school’s journey. The occasion marked with the home coming of the Junyuan family to celebrate the school’s achievements. |
2005 | Junyuan Primary School staged her first musical at the Victoria Junior College Auditorium, “Cinderella – Dreams do come true”. It was directed by Mrs Mae-Parkhill, former SAC member, assisted by Ms Koh Chieng Mun, a local TV actress. |
2007 | Before the school was relocated to her holding site, Jalan Tiga Ratus for PRIME upgrading, a special event - Nostalgia Evening, was organised for all staff and students, former and present. |
2009 | JYPS marked her homecoming on 29th December, with a walk led by Guest-of-Honour Mr Masagos Zulkifli, MP for Tampines West GRC. |
2011 | On 1st April, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister of State and Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC, officially opened the new JYPS campus with spanking new facilities. |
2016-2017 | The school attained the Lotus Award in 2016 and 2017 for her environmental efforts. In 2018, she attained the Vanda Miss Joaquim Award. |
2019 | Merger with East View Primary School. |
