School History

Mee Toh School was established by Venerable Sek Kong Hiap of Leong San Temple in 1954 along Race Course Road as a Chinese-medium school. Seeing that many children were not able to receive an education, he first started classes in Leong San Temple, and later offered the land originally bought to build Mee Toh Temple to build Mee Toh School instead. ‘Mee Toh’ (弥陀) refers to ‘eternal brightness’. Venerable Kong Hiap adopted the school motto – Compassion, Conscience, Purity and Righteousness – which originated from Master Hongyi, to encourage students to become better persons and seek continual improvement.

In 1957, Mee Toh School became a government-aided school. Mee Toh saw the first batch of Primary Six students taking the PSLE with English as the first language in 1985. Besides imparting knowledge and skills, the school advocated a curriculum that strengthened students’ character development through holistic experiences.

In the late 1990s, Mee Toh School faced dwindling enrolment due to an ageing population in the locality of Race Course Road and the outflow of residents to suburban new towns. In 2002, the Primary One enrolment fell to 26. Over those few years, the School Management Committee and stakeholders deliberated and debated over whether to keep the land at Race Course Road or to sustain the school through relocation. Finally, it was decided to accept the Ministry of Education’s proposed site for the new school compound in Punggol New Town. Mee Toh School shifted to 21 Edgedale Plains and started operating at the new premises in 2005. The school was officially opened the following year.

In 2014, Mee Toh School celebrated its 60th anniversary with the official opening of the School Heritage Centre. The school was accorded the Lifelong Learning Programme, ‘Sports Education Nurturing Character Excellence (SENCE@MTS)’, in 2014; and the Applied Learning Programme, ‘Educate, Engage and Empower Eco-Citizens (E3 Eco-citizens@MTS)’, in 2017.
