School History
New Town Primary School was established in 1965 as an integrated school, offering both English- and Chinese-medium classes across two sessions to meet the educational needs of families in Singapore’s first Housing and Development Board estate.
Located at 402 Commonwealth Drive, the school was officially opened on 26 July 1965. In 1983, New Town Primary School became an English-medium school. The school relocated in 1992 to the premises of the former Permaisura Primary School at Commonwealth Drive, and in 2004, it became a single-session school. A significant milestone came in 2009, when New Town Primary School merged with Ghim Moh Primary School and moved to its current campus at 300 Tanglin Halt Road.
The new school campus was officially opened in 2010, the same year the school celebrated its 45th anniversary. In 2015, New Town Primary School commemorated its 50th anniversary with a homecoming dinner held on 31 July, in conjunction with the nation’s SG50 celebrations. The event brought together alumni, staff and partners to honour the school’s heritage and shared memories.
The school completed the Primary Education Review and Implementation (PERI) upgrading in 2022, enhancing its learning environment with new facilities housed in a new block to better support students’ holistic development. In 2023, the school held its inaugural New Town Fiesta cum Fundraising, which raised funds for the school and strengthened school pride and community partnership.
In 2026, New Town Primary School commemorated its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of dedicated service. As the school honoured its rich history and legacy, it continues to look ahead with purpose — committed to continual improvement, embracing change, and shaping an exciting future for its students and community.
