School History

Established in 1965, Telok Kurau Secondary School (TKSS) was located on Chin Cheng Road.  The school’s official name then was Telok Kurau Integrated Secondary School as it had both English and Malay streams. Telok kurau is Malay for ‘mango fish bay’, and the name of a Malay village in the area.

The school was an icon in the national education of Singapore, having been established in the same year as Singapore’s independence. The building of the school was first envisioned by the government in the early 1960s. Amidst the tranquil enclave of a middle-class population and villages in the eastern part of the island, a school would be built to cater to the education needs of the Malay population in the area. It was the 55th school established by the government. After 16 years, TKSS ceased being an integrated school and became a full-fledged English-medium school in 1981.

In 2008, TKSS was one of the first schools to implement the School Within a School System (SWISS), endorsed by the Ministry of Education. The focus of SWISS was to promote hands-on activities and develop life-skill modules for the students. The first elective programme developed was Hairstyling and Beauty Therapy, a one-year programme, which saw successful students awarded with City and Guild’s Certificates at the end of it.

In 2011, the school merged with Broadrick Secondary School, taking on the name of the latter. In its 45 years of school history, TKSS nurtured more than 50,000 students of all races and many nationalities, many of whom have made key contributions to Singapore in the areas of academics, arts, sports, business and politics.

School Crest

The top section of the crest features a lion, representing Singapore. The red background in that section signifies racial harmony. The remaining portion of the crest has four components. The open book and the two pens represent the pursuit of holistic education. The initials of the school, ‘TKSS’, run diagonally across the crest. The four interlocking rings represent the harmony of the four main races in Singapore, while the burning torch symbolises the passion for continuous learning.
